So I’ve mentioned in my first post that I am an amateur poet. Amateur being the key word here.
I wrote a series of poems from about the age of 23 through to 29. I haven’t written any since but I looked over this series the other day.
The first thing I noticed is that they aren’t quite as good as I once thought they were. But hey, this is Memoirs of the Mind – and that is where these poems came from. So I present them to you.
I formed the poem’s into a book called Beauty and Disruption.
This series follows a journey. The journey from the beginnings of a young, happy and naive youth, through the downfall of a stage lost in grief and self pity, and eventually out the other side.
Here is the eighth of the series.
One of my pet hates is bitching. Especially about other people (I am pretty decent at bitching about my own life but I’m working on it).
I really feel that when you feel the need to moan about someone else behind their back or disclose your opinion about their business, it is completely destructive. It adds negativity to the spirit of the world around us. It adds negativity to a person whom we might not necessarily know the whole story about. And it adds negativity to yourself because the negativity is spawning from somewhere inside of you so therefore you are housing it and destroying your own spirit as well as the world’s.
Hey don’t get me wrong – it happens and we all do it. I just think it’s a trait that we should look out for and limit as best we can.
This is a poem about the kind of a person who seems to live by it.
The general message – if you are spending a considerable amount of your conversational time talking negatively about others. It’s probably an issue to do with yourself.
GOSSIP QUEEN (Rory Mouttet)
“Hello my dear friend.
Please tell me, are you well?
Now you really must hear,
the shocking news that I have to tell”
“I have a neighbour called Mr. Wright.
He goes out gambling every night.
No care at all for his kids and his wife.
Well its no wonder they always fight.”
“Or have you heard about Mrs. Mills?
The one who lost that weight with her own will?
Well she was addicted to diet pills.
And she relies on them heavily still.”
“Did you know about Miss Green?
She fell pregnant at just thirteen
Had an abortion, apparently.
Now would you please pass me, a little more tea?”
“That poor young lady Mrs. Belvedere.
I wonder if she’s even slightly aware,
that the reason her husband is never there,
is because he is having, another affair”
“So what about that shifty old Mr. Brown?
Recently I was told that he skipped town.
Left his business that was going down.
Well that’s the rumour that’s been going around”
“And then of course there’s that old Mrs. Frayne
Give me a minute, Oh I must explain!
When her mum died, she couldn’t deal with the pain.
So now she’s back on the bottle again”
Oh Gossip Queen.
She’s not hard to find.
She’s always seen,
Hanging by the grape vine.
For years she’s been twisting
words into lies,
Her own insecurities
Are what she hides.
